Connotations

Recently I have been enjoying texture, shape and colour, using sanded and polished 6 x6 inch pieces of old Floorboards from Colvestone Crescent, Dalston, London E8.Imagine the women on their knees scrubbing and polishing, and the families, running, pacing, standing, thinking of lovers, children, money, jobs, and poetry.. Perhaps the cleaners thought of the same things?

Unseen Labour 2019-20

City of Unseen Maintenance was the first work I made in this series. Afterwards I became aware of the signs of Unseen Labour everywhere, in Lesvos, Athens, Venice and London. In stations, street, outside and inside shops,  galleries museums, and houses. Back gardens and front gardens.  Our ‘tools’ are colourful, abandoned, half hidden, left in a corner, or in strange places. Meirle Ladermann Ukeles, New York Artist, introduced the phrase Maintenance Art, in the 70’s about her own work as a mother, and her artistic work, where she became the ‘cleaner/caretaker’ of the ‘places’ of art. Notably she also respected and recognised the work of 3000 refuse collectors in the New York Sanitation Department, by shaking each one of them by the hand.

Earth and Sky

Going back to 2006/7 I decided to use the most basic material I could of - soil and earth ...
